Then I am even more glad. He is a friend from home and thus important to me, so I wanted to.. well, to share that news with you.

[He feels strange. This is how friendship works yes? Sharing good and/or exciting news with friends? It feels oddly selfish to contact Ryan mostly based on that alone, though he does honestly hope for his two friends to also get along.]

Thank you, I appreciate it.

While I practice magic of a significantly different nature in my world, I am open to offering my perspective. Though, before I rattle off an academic answer, is there something you were specifically hoping to glean?

Such flattery.

To start: the magical weave, as it understood where I am from, permeates the extended universe and planes - even here, though manna is required to access it - and spellcasters are the conduit in which that raw magic is given form. Through items, words, and/or gestures we can craft a pattern or shape that facilitates the intended release of that energy. That is spellcasting.

You are correct, there are a number of different sources of how to access the ability to manipulate the weave in my world. The primary sources are the divinely granted and the arcanely acquired. Though those have a number of potential sources within them.

For casters like Caduceus, they are granted magic through divine gift. He appeals to his given or chosen deity with worship, reverence, and being the embodiment of her teachings and in turn she grants him with her favor, blessings, and the gift of healing. While not exclusive, you will find no other as skilled in the art of healing as magic users of the divine persuasion.

There are other sources of divine gift: druidic casters for example give their reverence to the natural world and the natural world grants upon them its favor. This relationship allows them to be particularly skilled in magics that utilize flora and fauna. At times a concept or purpose can be believed in strongly enough that it is given divine form, grants some an ability to crusade as a beacon of that concept.

Arcane magics can be perhaps more varied in how it is acquired. Some are able to harness and grow their arcane gifts through a rare bloodline - should one be descended of say a dragon, they might find themselves innately talented in arcane arts. There are a few that are granted their magics much like divine casters are, but through a different relationship. From what I have read, it is often referred to as a deal or pact for arcane ability - more an exchange or perhaps indentured servitude - these deals are not always made with divine beings but instead other powerful creatures.

There are some who learn to harness the arcane through innate creativity as well, allowing the creative forces within themselves take arcane form. Though this style of casting allows it to be more flexible, often bleeding the lines between arcane and divine.

While my bloodline does grant a small gift of magic, my particular perusal of arcane magic is called wizardry. A wizard is not granted magic through blood or divine favor or arcane pacts, but through pure academic fortitude. Through study, persistence, and a keen mind, a wizard learns of the weave and how to manipulate it at its most raw form of possibility. If there is to be someone who is willing delve into the potential of magic - to shape or even reinvent previously established spellcraft, to manipulate the weave to your own design, to reach and grasp beyond what is known, to challenge the risks for the chance of discovery - that is a wizard.

There are other ways of accessing the weave and how it might influence oneself that do not involve spellcasting. Some cast, some are martially inclined but learn to pull the weave to aid them, calling forth abilities that further their skillset. Most have some level of relationship with the weave, it just depends on how you build and develop it.

It is all rather fascinating.

Take your time. I am happy to further speak on the subject if you find yourself with questions.

[Essek doesn't know how to reply to the second part, so he leaves it at that, though he is blushing a touch to be complimented so because he wrote a such a lengthy reply about magic, about his passion.]
