We are all meant to shine, as children do. ...And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
personality
Loyal
|
When Ryan pledges himself to someone or something, that is his bond, and he will do everything he can to honor it. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and family, and though he often has trouble showing it in the traditional manner, Ryan is deeply compassionate towards the people he knows, and takes a shining to others easily. Even when he doesn't trust a person, he will still feel concerned for their well-being. He does not typically write people off, and would rather support someone and try to help them, than write them off completely.
Respectful
|
One of the things that is important to Ryan is that he behaves in accordance with the people around him. He makes an effort to learn local customs and social norms, and will make a sincere effort to integrate into the societies he passes through. This doesn't mean he will sacrifice his personal morals -- for example, he would not accept a local custom of sacrificing animals -- but he otherwise desires to fit in and not make any waves.
Adaptive
|
Ryan's overall friendliness and pragmatic approach to life makes him adaptable to most situations. He doesn't tend to dwell too long and goes with his gut instinct. He is confident in his abilities, and comfortable with letting things work themselves out in the long run. His straightforward mannerisms and self-confidence make it easy for him to ask for help when he needs it.
Determined
|
When Ryan sets his mind to something, he dedicates himself to it, and makes every effort to put his best foot forward. Even if it's something he doesn't like, he will still make every effort to see it to successful completion. The downside to Ryan's dedication to his goals is that it's hard to deter him once he's made up his mind on something. He will dig his heels in and it will take a lot to convince him to give up.
Impulsive
|
Although he would prefer to solve problems peacefully, Ryan can have trouble containing his temper under extreme duress, and his confidence can lead to making rash decisions. His straightforward approach can easily escalate a situation, if he's not careful. He's also prone to speak before he thinks; while it can be humorous (albeit embarrassing for him) at times, it can also be hurtful, when he doesn't stop to think about whether his wording is as sensitive as he thinks it is.

First Impressions
|
Tall, muscular, relaxed. It's hard to tell sometimes that his eyes are blue. He usually has a bit of scruff; he is rarely clean-shaven and doesn't seem to be too familiar with a hairbrush. Despite this, he is cleanly, and dressed comfortably but mostly fashionably.

history
Early Life
Ryan is born to Noah and Abby fielding on April 13th, 1995 in Lewiston, Maine. Shortly after Ryan is born, Noah returns to Washington state to handle some "family" business. Over the years, communication becomes more and more sparse, though he continues to send financial assistance of his own volition throughout Ryan's childhood. Ryan enjoys a largely pleasant adolescence with his mother. While there are ups and downs, they share a strong, loving relationship, and between her own business and the financial assistance from Noah, she is able to provide Ryan with a comfortable life.
In school, Ryan is quiet and reserved. He is scrawny and lanky, and he does not make many friends, generally ignored by other children. He prefers to spend his time during the warmer months out in the forest, and during colder months and rainy days, in the library. He develops a love for literature and his mother teaches him how to bind books, as a hobby. Later, in high school, Ryan goes out for the wrestling team and lands a spot. He starts working out more, and starts to become more confident, although his circle of friends remains fairly small.

The First Change
Towards the end of his senior year, in the spring, Ryan experiences his first transformation while out in the woods with two "friends" (really acquaintances) -- one of them tries to get Ryan to bully the other in a dangerous manner, and it escalates, resulting in his transformation. The bully is frightened off, and while the victim is rightfully terrified, they promise to keep his secret, and cover for him. Together they manage to convince others that the bully is just telling stories to try and get Ryan in trouble. Nothing much comes of the incident, though other students make it a point to avoid Ryan from then.
Abby convinces Noah to return to Maine to help with their son. She is more understanding than most, and being her son, she refuses to give up on Ryan. When he finally arrives in June, Noah comes clean about his heritage as a werewolf, much to both Abby's and Ryan's surprise. He reveals what he has been doing in the Pacific Northwest: he is a guard and investigator for a powerful magic family. His particular lineage of werewolves has been serving this family for centuries, and Noah left in order to prevent them from finding out about Ryan, hoping that he might never experience the change if he just led a normal life. He also implies that he, specifically, owes a particular debt of servitude to the current head of the family, but does not specify what it is.
Using magic he's spent his time away having developed, he gives his son a tattoo over his heart. It is imbued with a magic that will help him to control his changes a little easier, while he is still learning. Noah is able to see his son graduate from high school. However, before Noah is to return to Seattle, Ryan has a discussion with him, during which he insists that he will take on his father's debt and return to Seattle in his stead. It takes a bit of convincing, but Ryan's logic is that he would be going off to college and living his own life -- he would rather give his parents, who are still clearly in love, time together.

Moving to Seattle
Once he is able to convince his parents, it doesn't take much effort to get a women who introduced to him as his "aunt" to agree to the deal. Surprisingly easy, in fact, but the deal is made, and Ryan officially takes on his father's debt. Shortly therafter, he packs his few belongings, says goodbye to his parents, and flies to Seattle. When he arrives, he is taken His "Aunt V" gets him admission to the University of Washington through unknown means, despite being outside the application period. He doesn't ask too many questions. She insists that he needs to have some sort of education if he's going to be any good to her. Ryan finishes his undergraduate degree and starts towards graduate work. He becomes good friends with his aunt's wife Julie, and Julie's distant cousin Kessler. As he becomes more comfortable with his heritage, he begins to feel like things make more "sense", and he starts to develop more confidence. His social circle grows to include many actual friends, and not just passing friendly acquaintances. Julie also helps foster Ryan's love of music and film. He learns to play guitar (moderately well) and piano (not quite as well). During this time, Ryan is also learning about the world of magic. His aunt gives him another tattoo on the back of his neck that gives him some limited magical abilities in addition to his shifting.

abilties
Lycanthropy
|
Ryan can take one of two different forms at will and is not limited to moon phases, however the transformation is easier and makes him feel more energized closer to the crescent moon. Lycanthropy for Ryan is genetic, and cannot be transmitted via bite, claw, etc.
- Wolf form - a normal timber wolf. In this form, he cannot speak, though he retains his mental capacities. He gains all the benefits that come with being a wolf, such as enhanced sense of smell, sharp teeth, warm coat, and speed.
- Beast form - half-human half-wolf monster, tall and burly. In this form, he is more resistant to physical damage and is stronger. He gains the use of teeth and claws, however he cannot speak, and largely retains his mental capacity. However, this form is much easier to take when he is highly emotionally charged, whether he is angry or defensive. The wolf tattoo over his heart helps him keep some of his emotions in check, but he runs the risk of becoming partially feral in this form.
Ghostly Howl
|
While in either wolf form, he can tap into reserves of energy to let off a ghastly howl, causing enemies in his vicinity to become unnaturally frightened of him. He cannot do this too many times as it taps into magical energy, usually no more than once or twice a day tops. (He can also just do a normal howl and it's very cute but has no latent magical effects.)
Animal Ken
|
The ability to befriend and communicate with animals, and they can communicate with him in return, in a limited capacity. They are still limited by their own intelligence and mental capacity, and does not guarantee that they will be friendly towards him, if they were not already inclined towards it.
Spirit-Touched
|
Ryan has a connection to the spirit realm, and specifically has an affinity for spirits with strong ties to nature. This is mostly animals but also includes humanoids that aligned themselves with nature, such as druids, conservationists, etc. Typically they reach out to him to request guidance in the afterlife or help with their unfinished business, and he is obligated to assist to the best of his ability. They can also assist him in limited ways, but are not obligated to do so.
Simple Spellcasting
|
Thanks to his aunt, Ryan can cast a number of simple spells.
- Dancing Lights - Creates up to four torch-sized lights, making them appear as torches, lanterns, or glowing orbs that hover in the air. These lights can be moved, but cannot be moved more than twice the spell range from the caster.
- Friends - For the duration, any non-hostile humanoid target is more inclined to agree with the caster. When the spell is over, the target knows that magic has been used to influence them, and will react according to their normal behaviors.
- Light - One object no larger than 1 foot x 1 foot x 1 foot begins to glow with bright light of any color, for up to an hour. It otherwise behaves like a normal light: light can be blocked by covering it with something opaque, and obscured with smoke or fog. It can only be cast on one object at a time, and the caster must be able to touch the object. If the object is something worn or held, the light moves with it.
- Mage Hand - A spectral, floating hand appears within range, in a place the caster can see. The hand lasts for a minute, or until dismissed, or if it is ever out of range of the caster. Only one hand can be created at a time. This hand can perform simple actions, such as manipulating an object, unlocking a door, opening a container, stowing or retrieving an item, etc. The hand cannot cause harm, or carry more than 10 lbs.
- Minor Illusion - The caster creates a sound or an image of an object within range that lasts for no more than a minnute. The illusion also ends if you dismissed, or if another illusion is created. A sound's volume can range from a whisper to a scream. The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or can be made as discrete sounds at different intervals. An image of an object can be no larger than a 5-foot cube. The image can't create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect. Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.
- Prestidigitation - This spell is a minor magical trick that novice spellcasters use for practice, and can create one of the following magical effects within 10 feet of the caster:
- A harmless sensory effect, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, faint musical notes, or an odd odor.
- Light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire.
- Clean or soil an object no larger than 1 cubic foot.
- Chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material for 1 hour.
- A color, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface for 1 hour.
- Haunting Words - The caster can speak to a humanoid alone for at least 1 minute, and attempt to seed paranoia in its mind. At the end of the conversation, the target may be frightened of the caster or another creature of their choice. The target is frightened in this way for 1 hour, until it is harmed or attacked, or until it witnesses its allies being attacked or damaged. If the spell fails, the target does not know that magic was used on it. This spell can only be used once per day, and cannot be used on the same target more than once per week.
